Good evening, Kibitzers!
It's gotten a little too warm here for my preference. You can tell because today I cleaned the filters in all my window air conditioners. I hope everyone here is being favored with excellent weather, whatever you think that is.
My poor diary draft from a couple of weeks ago is getting kicked down the road once again today, this time because over the weekend, Crashing Vor showed us a fabulous very recent event. The event was a performance by the Rolling Stones at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, an annual extravaganza that just finished up on Sunday.
CV’s point in writing was that it’s likely a lot of people attending that performance think Joe Biden is “too old” to be president, even as they watch a man about the same age prance around and sing a full set of rock and roll (his sub-point: working in a somewhat obscure pun in the title). Of course he’s right, and I recommend his diary; however, my point in writing this diary is posting a bunch of live Stones songs.
I’m going with the guy who shot the video presented by Crashing Vor, Ande Rasmussen, since he seems to have a very complete collection. But you should know that a number of attendees at the show posted selections on YouTube, so if you really love the Stones, a quick search will turn up more video for you, from just about every angle and distance.
You should also know that this is not all the songs that are on YouTube. Check out Mr. Rasmussen’s link for more.
It’s worth hearing the band introductions, because they’re working with a number of excellent local musicians, and you’ll also want to hear Mick’s opening comments “welcoming” the governor of Louisiana. [3:05]
Start Me Up. [4:23]
This is the video Crashing Vor posted in his diary: Time Is on My Side, featuring Irma Thomas, a New Orleans legend known as “The Soul Queen of New Orleans”. This terrific singer is even older than Joe Biden and still going strong. [4:30]
Timeout from the concert for a short interview with Ms. Thomas on local CBS station WWL-TV. [2:11]
Satisfaction. [7:15]
Paint It Black. [4:49]
You Can’t Always Get What You Want. [7:53]
Let It Bleed features another guest, Dwayne Dopsie, of Dwayne Dopsie and the Zydeco Hellraisers. (Yes, he is a son of Rockin’ Dopsie.) [6:35]
Honky Tonk Women. [4:27]
Jumping Jack Flash. [4:59]
Miss You. [9:04]
Sympathy for the Devil. In my notes deciding which songs to include, I wrote “COAT”, because I felt that Mick’s beaded tailcoat was, by itself, reason enough to watch this video. I still do, although the performance is also very good. [6:21]
Finally from this set, Gimme Shelter. Gospel artist Chanel Haynes has been visible singing backup all along, and now she steps forward and does Merry Clayton proud. [6:02]
In other news: Rep. Jeff Jackson (NC-14) posted this video last night, and his analysis of wtf is going on in Congress is always worth hearing. [2:18]
I’ll close with the latest from Sandy and Richard Riccardi. They’ve done a Boy from Ipanema parody before, but now they have an updated “courtroom” version. [1:40]
